February marks the honoring of the Goddess Brigid, the threshold into spring and the Holy Day, Imbolc.
An eternal fire burned in Ireland reaching back into pre-Christian times. It is believed that 19 priestesses tended this fire on the hill of Kildare in Ireland to honor the Goddess Brigid and ask for her blessings and protection. When Saint Brigid built her monastery and church in Kildare, she continued the tradition. 19 Brigidine nuns have tended this flame, one per night with Brigid herself keeping the fire lit on the 20th night. While this flame was put out briefly (but could it ever really be put out?) by the church, it has since been relit and continues to burn brightly.
Come and participate in a very old tradition of lighting 19 flames…
